You can enjoy a taste of pioneering history in the Rustic Cabin at Glenview near the Caloundra turnoff on the Sunshine Coast.
This is the oldest restaurant in continuous use on the Sunshine Coast with 85 years of history feeding hungry travellers. If these walls had ears they would have listened to many a traveller’s tale as the road house was originally positioned on the Bruce Highway before it was relocated about 100 metres to its present position. Notables who have called in for a ‘pit stop’ include Queen Elizabeth II, and more recently Australian rock music legend Jimmy Barnes who stopped for lunch.
Diners can experience the nostalgia housed in the original log cabin built by Samuel Johnston and his wife Daisy who lived on site until her death in 1979. Some say Daisy still ‘roams’ her beloved tea rooms within the cabin. The basic outline of the timber walls still follow her husband’s original design and old photographs help relive what it was like to live here.
These days talented chef Brett Panter offers all-day dining featuring modern Australian cuisine using the freshest of seasonal ingredients.
“The atmosphere is definitely steeped in pioneering history but our cooking caters for contemporary tastes and guests will enjoy affordable meals in a wonderful location,” Brett said.
The a la carte menu is supported by a tasty selection of wood fired pizzas.
The Jowarra State Forest walking trail is accessed by guests from the back of the building. The 1-7 kilometre walk includes the Mooloolah River circuit and the Melaleuca walk. Both are mostly flat and meander through rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest. Keep an eye out for markings left by the traditional owners, and signage explaining plant species.
The Rustic Cabin is fully licensed and popular for functions and special events such as weddings and can cater for 110 seated guests. The work of local artists is featured on the walls and available for purchase. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to late. 2859 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview, telephone 5494 5192.
